CourseSites by Blackboard

Frequently Asked Questions

  • What is a CourseSite?

A CourseSite is basically a no-cost online learning environment that you can set up to match your personal teaching style, curricula, and student needs. It can give you significant power beyond the traditional classroom. You can create CourseSites to post course materials, communicate with students, encourage collaboration, monitor performance, and manage grades. CourseSites are available to you and your students anytime, 24/7 via the Internet.

The flexible menu and course design capabilities give educators at all levels the ability to connect with learners of all ages—from K-12 all the way through to retirement and beyond. CourseSites support all types of teaching methods and learning needs—from lecture series to social learning and even employee training.

  • How much does CourseSites cost?

We are serious, CourseSites is absolutely FREE.

  • What’s the catch?

There’s no catch. No fine print. Signing up is free. Setting up a CourseSite is free. And, there are no hidden fees involved to run the course(s).

  • How many CourseSites can I create?

There is no limit to the number of CourseSites that you can create. Although, to ensure you don’t overdo it, an instructor can only have up to five CourseSites available to students at any one time. We think that’s a pretty heavy teaching load and are looking out for your sanity!

  • How do I get started?

Getting started is simple. Sign up in 60 seconds by following the three steps below.

    1. Click the Sign Up Now link at the top of this web page.

    2. Login using a current Facebook, Twitter, Gmail, Hotmail, or Yahoo username and password, or create a new account in CourseSites.

    3. Agree to the Terms of Use.

It’s that easy! Once you have signed up, you can then customize your homepage and create your CourseSite. Our Course Creation Wizard will walk you through every step.

  • How will students gain access to the CourseSite(s) I create?

Once you set up your course, you can use the Course Invitations tool to invite your students. Students simply follow the link in the invitation, establish a CourseSites account and join your course. You can monitor the status of your invitations to see who’s viewed and accepted their invitations.

If the students are already members of CourseSites, you can invite them too! Students can enroll using existing account information when accepting the invitation.

You also have the ability to create accounts for students with randomly generated usernames and passwords.

  • Can I co-teach a course?

Absolutely! We encourage and support collaboration. If your co-instructor doesn’t have a CourseSites account, simply use the Course Invitation tool to send an invitation to join CourseSites and your course as a co-instructor. You can even monitor the status of your invitations to see who’s viewed and accepted.

If co-instructors are already members of CourseSites, you can invite them too!

CourseSites is powered by the latest Blackboard Learn technology, along with aspects of Blackboard Mobile, Blackboard Collaborate and Blackboard Connect. The majority of powerful core features of these technologies are available at no cost to use by individual teachers and students at all levels. CourseSites is currently running Blackboard Learn, Release 9.1.

To optimize the use of these technologies at the individual level and to give you more power beyond the classroom, we’ve added a few specific features available only to CourseSites, which include:
